Voice Lessons with Michael

Welcome! I am thrilled to introduce my queer, neurodivergent, and trauma-informed voice studio.

A little about me:

I sang long before getting one-on-one lessons, but voice lessons truly changed my life. Once I started learning how all of these fancy terms applied to me and and my singing, my confidence skyrocketed. It left me with a greater understanding of music but more importantly, gave me tools and feedback I needed to achieve a healthier relationship with my body as a whole.

I have seen time and again that a foundation of health, communication, and play works. I love watching my students grow, whether they are singing at home alone, with friends, or performing professionally.

Singing Can Be Healthy

I am not one to say that any specific style of teaching is superior. What I can say is that classical training asks you to sing in the most efficient and clear way; no unnecessary force, no holding tension, and no sacrificing health for effect--you don't need to! From a healthy place, you can sing virtually any style.

While my bachelor's and master's both focused on classical technique, I have been singing many genres my whole life. I have found that applying concepts and tools from classical singing ensures that my students are healthy and safe as they continue singing in their preferred genre.

Music Is Communication

When we make music, we are choosing to share a story or idea with an audience. Whether you are singing a folk song or an atonal contemporary piece, good vocal technique allows you to make intentional choices about how to bring your concept into the room. For me, delivering my music in the way I intended it is one of the most fulfilling ways to feel heard.

Practice Is Play

There is so much we each can learn about our bodies. Not only are they unique in comparison to other’s, they are different from day to day. My lessons and pedagogy will always have a foundation in play. In a productive, focused lesson, we will experiment to find which method works best for you over time.

We must be ready to laugh at ourselves. Singing is such a full-body experience and that means we will be walking around, making strange sounds, and trying things that might fail the first few times. I WILL DO IT WITH YOU. Let's have some fun!
