Getting Started

I am so excited to be working with each of you. Below, I am including a few ways that you can prepare for and get the most out of our first lesson. I am also including videos that show how to optimize Zoom and FaceTime calls for virtual lessons if/when that is applicable.

Plisse Trousers

Choose a location

  • There is nothing wrong with people hearing our lessons or your practicing. That said, I find that I am more willing to take risks if I feel like I am not being perceived. I am a firm believer that we only learn something new if we allow ourselves to try the things that feel scary. So, choose somewhere where you can let your guard down and make a few necessary mistakes.

  • On a more physical level, we will need space on the floor to lay down and enough room to wave your arms around.

Song Notes

Choose a song

  • This should be a song you can sing without staring at the sheet music or lyrics for every word. If you have a karaoke track, have that saved.

  • If you are accompanying yourself on an instrument, practice so you feel comfortable.

Refillable Water Bottle

Come hydrated

  • It is always good practice to stay hydrated, but especially when putting any expectations on such a delicate part of your body. Your vocal folds are so tiny, and dehydration does not set you up for success at all.

  • Also, when a musical phrase or exercise feels funky, swallowing something refreshing is a good reset; I ask my students to grab some water and tea to keep nearby.
